Suspect in 2016 killing of Utah teenager is extradited from Mexico

The suspected shooter was reportedly mad that the victim threw an egg at him.

A man charged with shooting and killing a Utah teenager who reportedly threw an egg at him has been extradited from Mexico. Fortunato Villagrana was charged with the killing in 2017.

According to charging documents, on July 5, 2016, 16-year-old Paris Gustin was in a Honda Civic with friends, driving around the Rose Park area and throwing eggs. When a Nissan pulled up next to them, Gustin reportedly leaned out the front passenger window and threw an egg through the open window of the other car, hitting the driver.

Shortly thereafter, the Nissan began chasing the Honda. According to the other teenagers in the Honda, someone leaned out the front passenger window of the Nissan and began shooting. Gustin was struck in the head and in the back, and died a short time later.

Witnesses identified Villagrana as the man who was hit by the egg, and told police he went home and got a gun — believed to be an AK-47, the documents state. He went looking for the teenagers who threw the egg, and fired multiple shots at their car, the witnesses told police.

After the shooting, Villagrana left Utah and went to Mexico, authorities said. In 2017, he was charged in 3rd District Court with murder and discharge of a weapon with serious bodily injury, both first-degree felonies, and two counts of felony discharge of a weapon, third-degree felonies.

Salt Lake City police announced that Villagrano, now 27, was brought to Salt Lake City by the U.S. Marshals Service on Thursday. He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail, where he is being held on bail of $1,017,507.
