Need a COVID-19 test in Utah? Avoid this site if you can, officials say

The Utah Department of Health expects the Cannon Health Building to be swamped.

The Utah Department of Health expects continued high demand for COVID-19 tests following the long Christmas weekend.

Testing sites are open across the state this week. But the Health Department is advising people to avoid the Cannon Health Building’s south parking lot, located at 288 N. 1460 West, if at all possible. Lines formed there Sunday lasted hours, officials said.

“If you do not need a rapid test for travel, we suggest you visit one of our other test sites,” UDOH advised in a news release Monday.

All COVID-19 testing sites were closed Saturday because of the Christmas holiday, which led to increased demand on Sunday, officials said.

The Health Department adjusted operations Monday in anticipation of continued demand this week, including at the Cannon site. According to UDOH, lines were shorter there Monday — wait times averaged an hour or less. But most other sites saw wait times of 30 minutes or less, Charla Haley, a UDOH spokesperson, said.

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) A steady line of vehicles filled with multiple people waiting to be tested for COVID-19 are tended to by members of the Utah Department of Health at the Cannon Health Building, Dec. 27, 2021.

The Cannon site is open Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.; Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. It offers a dedicated lane for travelers who need testing prior to leaving Utah.

However, UDOH warned that not all travel destinations accept the types of tests offered at the Cannon site, noting that travelers should check which type of test is needed for their destination. Some destinations also require testing to be done at a specific location, and/or a QR code that links to test results. QR code links are not available at the Cannon site.

For more information on travel requirements by destination, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html.

A full list of testing sites is available at cornoavirus.utah.gov. All sites offer PCR, rapid antigen tests, and nasal swab PCR tests for anyone 3 or older, though some listed below also offer tests for anyone 1 or older.
