After Clinton police open fire, Utah surpasses record for most police shootings in a year

The fatal police shooting Thursday followed two stabbings in Clinton, police said.

Two people were stabbed before police shot a man to death in Clinton on Thursday night, according to the Clinton City Police Department.

The police shooting marked the 31st in Utah this year, breaking a state record set in 2018 and matched in 2020, according to records maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune.

In Clinton, the string of events that led to the police shooting Thursday began shortly before 6:30 p.m., according to police. A man living in a home near 1700 North and 1300 West was arguing with another man who lived there, then stabbed him multiple times, police said.

The assailant then ran outside, where he encountered a woman who lived nearby, then stabbed her multiple times, too, police said.

When officers arrived, they found the man running down the street, police said. One or more officers fired their guns at the man, killing him. He was identified Friday evening as Christopher Anthony Alexander, 32.

It is unclear if Alexander was running toward officers at the time of the shooting. It also is unclear if he was holding a knife when police opened fire. Police did not immediately release further details.

The two people stabbed — a man in his 30s and a woman in her 50s — were hospitalized, police said. They are expected to recover.

The stabbings and the police shooting remain under investigation.
