A man was shot to death by Orem police on Sunday night after he reportedly stabbed his father and threatened officers.
According to Orem police, officers were called to a “domestic violence situation” at an apartment near 50 East and 1100 South shortly before 11 p.m. A caller reported a 41-year-old man had attacked his 68-year-old father with a knife, inflicting wounds to his neck area. The man then ran away, the caller said.
Officers said they located the suspect a short time later, a short distance away. According to police, the man was “not compliant” when they tried to take him into custody. He “charged at officers,” with unspecified weapons in both hands, according to a news release from the Orem Police Department, and at least one of the officers fired shots at him.
Although the suspect was given medical attention, the release said, he died at the scene. Police did not say how many times the officer fired. The 68-year-old victim was taken to a hospital; his condition was not available Monday evening. The names of the suspect and the victim have not been released.
A call requesting additional information from police Monday evening was not immediately returned.
The shooting is under investigation by the Utah County Officer Involved Critical Incident Team. According to Orem police, the involved officers were wearing body cameras, and more information “could be released at a later date.”
This is the 29th shooting by police this year in Utah. The record is 30 shootings in a year, reached in both 2020 and 2018.
