A Utah Department of Corrections officer is accused of arranging a sexual encounter with a person he believed to be a 13-year-old girl.
Victor D. Smith, 55, of Eagle Mountain, was charged in 4th District Court with attempted sodomy upon a child, a first degree felony; and enticing a minor over the internet, a second-degree felony.
According to the charging documents, Smith used an internet app to communicate with and have “sexually explicit conversations” with the person he believed to be a junior high student.
Smith arranged to meet the person at a park on Friday, the documents state. The person was actually an undercover Orem officer. When Smith arrived at the location, he was arrested. He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail, where he is being held without bail.
The Utah Department of Corrections placed Smith on administrative leave. In a statement, the agency said, “This behavior is not tolerated.”
