A West Jordan man is accused of shooting and killing another man during a Halloween party at a Salt Lake City warehouse.
Roy Anthony Duran, 20, was charged in 3rd District Court with murder, possession of a gun by a restricted person and obstruction of justice, court records state.
According to charging documents, the shooting occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on Oct. 24 at the Halloween party in a warehouse near 500 West and 600 South. Multiple witnesses told police that Duran was trying to fight with other partygoers when he punched Duran punched Isaiah Valerio, 21, in the face.
Several other people then jumped Duran. He pulled out a gun and “racked the slide,” the documents state.
People began running away from Duran, witnesses told police. Investigators obtained video of Duran approaching Valerio and, “without provocation,” punching him in the face. Moments later, Duran “pulled out the gun and shot the unarmed victim at point blank range in the face,” then left the scene.
One witness told police that Duran had argued with several people at the party and repeatedly lifted his shirt to flash a gun tucked into his pants. Another witness said someone punched her in the stomach during the fight and that Valerio leaned over and asked if she was OK.
As Valerio stood back up, she said, Duran approached him and shot him in the head. Valerio died at the scene, police said.
Duran turned himself in to Clearfield police the following day. He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail, where he is being held without bail. The gun used in the fatal shooting has not been found.
