Layton High student struck by 2 cars while walking to school

The 15-year-old was seriously injured, police said.

A Layton High School student is expected to survive after she was hit by two cars while walking to school on Tuesday morning.

According to Layton police, the 15-year-old girl was crossing the street at or near the intersection of Wasatch Drive and Hawthorne Drive when she was hit at approximately 7:00 a.m. Police said they are not certain if she was in a crosswalk.

A minivan driven by another Layton High student struck the teenager and pulled over, police said. As the driver of the minivan got out to help the girl, the driver of a second car — the parent of another Layton High student — did not see the girl in the road and ran over her. The girl’s name has not been released.

Police said it was dark and the roadway was wet at the time. The drivers of both cars stopped and cooperated with officers.

The girl had to be pulled from beneath the second car, police said. She was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital in serious condition and then flown by helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital, but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

Police continue to investigate.
