Utah boy struck by car while trick-or-treating dies

Another boy suffered critical injuries in the Taylorsville crash, police said.

One of two boys who was struck by a car while trick-or-treating Saturday has died, Taylorsville police announced Monday.

Karl Finch, 13, and three other children were in a crosswalk at 2700 W. Matterhorn Drive (near 6300 South) at about 7 p.m. Saturday when Karl and another boy were hit, according to Taylorsville Police Chief Brady Cottam. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

Police initially said one of boys was airlifted to Primary Children’s Hospital in “extremely critical condition.” The second boy was critically injured but is expected to survive, police said.

Karl suffered “a major head trauma,” according to a GoFundMe page set up to help cover his medical expenses. He died early Monday due to his injuries, police confirmed.

The GoFundMe page describes Karl as the oldest of four children, a straight-A student, an accomplished pianist and a “devoted baseball player and fan.”

“This kind hearted, intelligent young man was just beginning to make his mark in the world,” the page states.

Police said speed was not considered a factor in the wreck. As of Monday afternoon, the driver had not been arrested and was not facing any charges.

“This is a tragic accident,” Cottam said. “We hope incidents like this never happen, especially on Halloween weekend when children are outside celebrating. At this time, we pray for comfort for the Finch family. All of us at the City of Taylorsville extend to them our deepest sympathy.”

The GoFundMe page had raised more than $23,000 as of Monday afternoon.
