Utahns can no longer make COVID-19 testing appointments with TestUtah

Sites are now operating on a first-come, first-serve basis, according to Utah Department of Health.

As demand for COVID-19 testing surges, TestUtah is no longer taking appointments and Utahns now get tested at its locations on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The goal with making this change, which went into effect over the weekend, is to reduce wait times, Tom Hudachko, spokesperson for the Utah Department of Health, said in an email.

Most of the TestUtah sites are now run by the Orem company Nomi Health, so that the Department of Health frees up personnel for testing at schools. The state health department still handles testing at its public health lab.

No appointment times were listed in Utah on the TestUtah website Monday morning. Instead, the website showed “walk-ups accepted” at each site, with a link for people to “pre-register.” People were then asked to enter their contact information and about any symptoms they had, before being given a QR Code with an ID number.

“This walk-up appointment is first-come, first-served. In the event of high volumes, you may be turned away without receiving testing,” according to the website.

Why switch to walk-up appointments?

This change was made “due to the recent surge in testing needs across the state,” Hudachko said.

“Typically the testing sites offer both appointments and walk-ups at all locations across the state. Under normal circumstances this model works fine,” Hudachko said. “But in times of a significant surge (like now), the shift to a walk-up only model has proven to be more efficient.”

By using the walk-up-only approach, people “are more likely to go to sites near them,” instead of “driving long distances for a guaranteed appointment,” making sure people “are distributed more evenly across the sites,” according to Hudachko.

The department began phasing in the walk-up model last week, he said, and it went into full effect Saturday.

When should I get to a site to make sure I get a test?

“We do not recommend people arrive any earlier than 10 minutes prior to the opening of any testing site,” Hudachko said. “We have enough tests and are prepared and ready for a steady flow of patients every day at every location.”

Hudachko said people can go for a test “when it’s most convenient for them” during operating hours.

The average wait time is currently 15 to 30 minutes across all sites, he said, “and we expect that time to remain consistent.”

“This improved wait time is a direct result of the transition to the walk-up model,” according to Hudachko.

Will sites run out of tests?

“We currently have the supply, staff and capacity to conduct thousands of tests per day at each testing site,” Hudachko said, and “we are constantly evaluating supply based on demand across the state.”

“We do not, and have not had any shortage of supplies to date and do not anticipate that to change,” he said.

Where are TestUtah sites this week?

All of these testing sites offer PCR, rapid antigen tests, and NP (nasopharyngeal) swab PCR tests based on samples taken from deeper in the nasal cavity. And all of these testing sites offer testing for children ages three and older.

Results will be emailed with a link to the patient portal where results can be accessed. For the most accurate results, health officials recommend people without symptoms receive a PCR test. PCR results are available within 2 to 3 business days. Antigen (rapid) results are available within two hours. For issues with accessing TestUtah results, please call (801) 783-1829.

These TestUtah locations can now test children ages one year and older.
