27 more Utahns died of COVID-19 over the Labor Day weekend

Another 4,687 cases reported over the last four days in Utah; just less than a quarter of them were children.

Almost 4,700 Utahns tested positive for COVID-19 in the past four days, and just less than a quarter of them were school-age children.

There were 1,871 cases reported on Friday, 1,187 on Saturday, 922 on Sunday, and 707 on Monday, for a total of 4,687 and a daily average of about 1,172, the Utah Department of Health announced Monday.

The Utah Department of Health no longer issues updates on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. And the number of tests — and the number of new cases — generally decreases on the weekends and holidays.

Friday’s total was the most new cases in a single day since Jan. 26.

UDOH removed 29 cases from the overall count after what it called “data quality analysis.”

Kids in grades K-12 accounted for 1,151 of the newly reported cases. There were 493 cases in children ages 5-10; 290 cases in children 11-13; and 368 cases in children 14-18.

The rolling seven-day average for positive tests stands at 1,382 per day.

Another 27 Utahns died of the coronavirus in the past four days. Ten of them were under the age of 65, and three were under the age of 45.

In the past four weeks, unvaccinated Utahns were 4.1 times more likely to die of COVID-19 than vaccinated people, according to a UDOH analysis. The unvaccinated were also 5.9 times more likely to be hospitalized, and 4.6 times more likely to test positive for the coronavirus.

An additional 8,052 Utahns were fully vaccinated in the past four days, bringing the total to 1,599,491 — 48.9% of Utah’s total population.

Washington County reported seven deaths: Two men and a woman between the ages of 45-64, two men and a woman 65-84, and a man 85-plus.

There were five deaths in Salt Lake County: Two men and two women 65-84, and one man 85-plus.

There were also five deaths in Davis County: A man 45-64, two men and a woman 65-84, and a woman 85-plus.

Three Utah County residents died: Two men 25-44, and a man 65-84.

The others who died were a Box Elder County woman 25-44, a Beaver County man 45-64, a Cache County woman 25-44, a Sanpete County man 65-84, a Sevier County woman 85-plus, a Uintah County man 45-64, and a Weber County man 65-84.

Tests reported in past four days • 38,555 people were tested for the first time. A total of 58,564 people were tested.

Hospitalizations reported in the past four days • 482. That’s 21 fewer than on Friday. Of those currently hospitalized, 175 are in intensive care, nine fewer than on Friday.

Percentage of positive tests • Under the state’s original method, the rate is 12.2% over the past four days. That’s slightly lower than the seven-day average of 12.6%.

The state’s new method counts all test results, including repeated tests of the same individual. The rate over the past four days was 8%, lower than the seven-day average of 9.5%.

Totals to date • 474,086 cases; 2,685 deaths; 20,603 hospitalizations; 3,217,671 people tested.

According to the UDOH, Utah has seen 11,906 “breakthrough” cases of COVID-19 — people who contracted the virus two weeks or more after being fully vaccinated. That’s 0.74% of people who are fully vaccinated.

Only 645 of those people required hospitalization — 0.04% of those fully vaccinated. And there have been 64 deaths — 0.004% of those fully vaccinated.
