An Orem man is dead after he was shot by Provo police on Tuesday night.
According to Provo police, officers tried to pull over a car driven by Paul Rasmussen, 48, on Geneva Road, but the car sped away. At that time, officers did not pursue the vehicle.
About 10 p.m., about an hour later, a Utah County Sheriff’s Office detective and a Pleasant Grove police detective spotted the car, parked near 300 North and 900 West. According to police, officers turned on their car’s police lights and Rasmussen pointed a gun at them.
Both detectives fired at Rasmussen, who was struck “multiple times,” according to Provo police, who did not say if Rasmussen fired his weapon. The detectives were not injured.
Rasmussen was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, where he died shortly thereafter.
Police did not say why they tried to pull Rasmussen over. The shooting remains under investigation.
