More rain is headed for flood-ravaged Cedar City

Thunderstorms are coming to northern Utah, too.

There’s a chance of isolated thunderstorms in southern Utah on Tuesday, and the moisture is moving north.

Cedar City, which was hit hard by flash floods on Monday, isn’t out of the woods yet, according to the National Weather Service. There’s a slight chance (20%) of more rain Tuesday morning, and a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon — and some of those storms “could produce heavy rains.”

There’s also a 20% chance of more rain in Cedar City on Wednesday afternoon; a 60% chance on Thursday afternoon; and an 80% chance on Friday afternoon. And there could be more rain on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

As of Tuesday morning, the NWS had issued no flash flood watches or warnings for Utah. However, flash floods are “probable” in more than half of Utah’s national parks and national monuments — Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Natural Bridges, San Rafael Swell and Zion. And flash flooding is “possible” in Arches, Canyonlands, Glen Canyon and Grand Gulch.

On Wednesday, flash flooding is “probable” in Arches, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Glen Canyon, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Natural Bridges and San Rafael Swell; “possible” in Canyonlands, Grand Gulch and Zion.

According to the National Weather Service, Wednesday will see flash flood potential in recently burned areas and slot canyons, but decreased probabilities across southern Utah. There will be increased chances for northern Utah, especially east of the Wasatch, with heavy rain is possible and the potential for urban flooding.

As the showers and thunderstorms build in northern Utah on Tuesday, they will push out the smoke from fires in California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho out of the state. The storms could bring heavy rain, hail, gusty winds and flash flooding.

In Salt Lake City, there’s a 50% chance of rain on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and a 70% chance on Friday, mostly in the afternoons. And there’s also rain in the forecast on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. After a high of 93 on Tuesday, expect temperatures near 90 Wednesday-Friday, in the mid-80s Saturday and Sunday and in the low 80s on Monday.
