Fire that destroyed partially built apartment complex in Ogden is under investigation

The blaze also burned five nearby homes and multiple firetrucks.

Everyone has been accounted for after a massive fire destroyed an apartment complex under construction in Ogden and torched five nearby homes.

One woman was taken into custody in connection to the fire, according to Ogden police. Lt. Jason Vanderwarf said Tuesday evening that the woman was released because there wasn’t enough evidence to file charges, but she remains a person of interest.

No one was seriously injured in the fire near 28th Street and Grant Avenue, although one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.

About 80 firefighters remained on the scene Tuesday morning to watch for flare-ups, hours after towering flames from the three-story apartment complex could be seen for miles.

The fire began at the apartment complex about 10:30 p.m. Monday and destroyed that partially built structure and five adjacent homes. It also seriously damaged nearby businesses, burned power poles and damaged several vehicles, including multiple firetrucks. Preliminary estimates put the damage at at least $3 million, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

According to Ogden fire officials, there had been another fire at an abandoned structure in the same area — near 29th Street and Washington Avenue — earlier in the day, which caused at least $250,000 in damage.
