A man and woman are in custody after an altercation with police that shut down traffic near Yuba State Park for more than three hours on Wednesday evening, FOX 13 reports.
Police said they were looking for the man near Yuba State Park on Wednesday afternoon. The Millard County Sheriff’s Office said he had a rifle and was “considered very dangerous.” He was taken into custody before 8 p.m.
FOX 13 reported that the man was pulled over for a traffic stop. He fled the scene with the woman, and the pair allegedly stole a police car with a K9 and a rifle inside.
Gunfire was exchanged between the man and police. A civilian was shot in the leg and taken to the hospital, according to FOX 13. The man was arrested after he was found hiding in the Sevier River. He apparently had gunshot wounds from the shots exchanged with police.
Traffic was halted on Interstate 15 around Nephi and Scipio while police attempted to arrest the man. UDOT said the northbound lane was closed in Scipio and the southbound lane was closed near Chicken Creek Reservoir, which is close to Nephi. The lanes were both open by 8:23 p.m.
