Police identify man found dead in home after Bountiful fire

A police officer and a firefighter were taken to a hospital.

Police have identified a man who was found dead in the basement of a home in Bountiful on Friday.

Firefighters recovered the body of Scott E. Moore, 61, after a house fire on Maple Hollow Way. Bountiful Police Assistant Chief Dave Edwards said a call about the fire came in around 10 a.m. on Friday. Police believed a person was inside and attempted a rescue. They had to turn back because of the fire, and one officer was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation. He has since been released.

Edwards said firefighters from the South Davis Metro Fire Service also attempted a rescue but were turned back by the extreme heat. One firefighter was taken to the University of Utah hospital and admitted to the burn unit. He has since been released and is recovering, Deputy Chief Greg Stewart said Monday.

By 3 p.m., the fire had subsided enough that firefighters could get inside the structure. Moore was found in the home’s basement. Edwards described the situation as “a very tragic event” and said the department expressed its condolences to the man’s family.

The police, fire department, fire marshal and medical examiner are investigating the man’s cause of death and the cause of the fire.
