The number of new cases of COVID-19 reported in the past day in Utah surged to almost 600 on Wednesday. The 590 new cases were the most in a single day since April 6, when 611 were reported.
The number of Utahns fully vaccinated against the coronavirus reached almost 820,000. That’s roughly 36% of eligible Utahns ages 16 and older, based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019 estimates of the state’s population.
But the state also reported three more deaths attributed to COVID-19.
Vaccine doses administered in past day/total doses administered • 34,472 / 1,950,894.
Utahns fully vaccinated • 819,683.
Cases reported in past day • 590.
Deaths reported in past day • Three: A man between the ages of 65 and 84 in Davis County; a woman in the same age range in Iron County; and a woman 25 to 44 in Utah County.
Tests reported in past day • 4,057 people were tested for the first time. A total of 15,496 people were tested.
Hospitalizations reported in past day • 146. That’s up eight from Tuesday. Of those currently hospitalized, 58 are in intensive care units — two more than on Tuesday.
Percentage of positive tests • Under the state’s original method, the rate is 14.5%. That’s more than double the seven-day average of 6.2%.
The state’s new method counts all test results, including repeated tests of the same individual. Wednesday’s rate was 3.8%, higher than the seven-day average of 3.0%.

Totals to date • 393,862 cases; 2,177 deaths; 15,981 hospitalizations; 2,505,996 people tested.
