The first day of spring brought heavy snow and slow roads to northern Utah.
Little Cottonwood Canyon will close to traffic Saturday night and reopen Sunday morning for avalanche control.
UDOT Cottonwood Canyon said uphill traffic will close at 12:30 a.m. Sunday and downhill traffic will close at 1 a.m. Sunday. Traffic will reopen at 8 a.m. Sunday.
Uphill traffic was reopened in Big Cottonwood Canyon on Saturday afternoon after being closed because of multiple slide offs, according to UDOT Cottonwood Canyons.
Drivers should expect delays because of road closures and road conditions, according to UDOT. Drivers should also watch for icy spots as temperatures drop.
The department said the closure was intended to allow personnel to clear vehicles.
The closures came amid heavy snow and rainfall in northern Utah. The National Weather Service said the 0.73 inches of precipitation that had fallen at the Salt Lake airport as of 2 p.m. broke the previous record for the day of 0.69, set in 1946.
Twelve inches of snow had fallen at Brighton as of 7:30 p.m., and eight inches had fallen at Summit Park.
The weather service said mountains in northern Utah should see temperatures around 10 degrees Fahrenheit or lower on Sunday. There will be more precipitation with a break Sunday night and early Monday morning.
A second storm on Monday will bring more precipitation to northern Utah. Rain and snow will spread to central and southern Utah on Tuesday with unseasonably cold temperatures, according to the weather service.
