Road work is expected to cause delays of up to 20 minutes next week on northbound Interstate 15 in southern Salt Lake County.
On Sunday, crews will close one northbound land between 9000 South and Interstate 215 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then on Tuesday through Thursday, they will close up to two northbound lanes between Bangerter Highway and 11400 South daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Utah Department of Transportation said.
The closures will allow crews to pave and install permanent concrete barriers in multiple locations.
Typically, the work is performed in overnight hours to minimize inconvenience for drivers. However, nighttime temperatures currently are too cold for concrete to cure effectively.
The work is part of a project to widen northbound I-15 with an extra lane in the south valley, and to add a new parallel set of collector lanes from 9400 South to I-215.
That new collector system will be similar to one used between 2100 South and 900 South in Salt Lake City. The new three-lane freeway section will be separated from the I-15 travel lanes by a concrete barrier and is designed to improve access to I-215 and 7200 South.
The new collector system is scheduled to open early this year, with the full project scheduled to finish in the summer. This project is expected to reduce crashes in the area by nearly 40% and northbound travel times by 50%. More details about the project are available at udot.utah.gov/i15northbound.
Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change. Updated information on traffic patterns and restrictions during construction are available at udottraffic.utah.gov or on the UDOT traffic app.
