The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced where it will build a new temple in Lindon.
The structure will be located near 800 East and Center Street in the Utah County city.
The temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson at the church’s General Conference in October. No date has been set for the start of construction in the city of about 11,000. An exterior rendering has not been released, but plans call for a three-story temple of about 81,000 square feet. The church will begin working with city officials “immediately” to finalize the plans.
Utah currently has 15 operating Latter-day Saint temples. Two more, the historic Salt Lake City and St. George structures, are undergoing renovation. Eight others are planned. Five more are under construction in Utah — in Layton, Orem, Saratoga Springs, St. George and Taylorsville. In addition to Lindon, temples have been announced for Syracuse and Tooele Valley.
Seven of those either existing or planned temples are in Utah County. In addition to two temples in Provo, one in American Fork and one in Payson, the church has announced three more coming to the state’s second most populous county — in Orem, Saratoga Springs and Lindon.
All of the church’s temples have been limited by the pandemic.
The church’s headquarters are in Utah, and about 13% of the faith’s members live in the state. It will be home to 11% of the temples that are either currently operating, under renovation or announced.
Latter-day Saints view temples as “Houses of the Lord,” places where the faithful participate in the church’s most sacred rituals, including eternal marriages.
