Utah man dies after his gun goes off while he fought with his daughter

Police investigating to determine if he died from accidental or self-inflicted gunshot.

A Springville man is dead after his gun went off while he was fighting with his daughter on Monday.

Police said they were called to an apartment complex at 602 W. 550 South at 5:15 p.m. after a gunshot was heard. An 18-year-old woman and a 17-year-old girl, who were outside, told officers they had been arguing with the 18-year-old’s father — identified by police as Neil R. Goslin, 50 — and he began waving a gun around during the dispute.

The daughter told police that when her father turned on her friend, she got between the two and fought physically with her father. During the struggle, Goslin’s gun went off, hitting him “in an unknown location of his body,” according to a news release from Springville police.

The 18-year-old was taken to a hospital to be treated for a head injury suffered during the fight.

Officers tried to contact Goslin, who was still inside the apartment, but he did not respond. Believing Goslin had barricaded himself inside the apartment, Springville police called in the Utah County Metro SWAT team. The SWAT team sent a robot into the apartment, and video showed Goslin on the floor of the living room. When officers entered the apartment, they found Goslin was dead.

Police are investigating to determine if he died from the accidental gunshot wound or from a self-inflicted gunshot.
