Two people have been charged in conjunction with a shooting that killed a man and injured a woman in a downtown Salt Lake City apartment building early Saturday morning.
The shooting happened in an elevator at Milagro Apartments at 241 W. 200 South shortly before 4 a.m. on Saturday. Police say the man who died was 23-year-old Miguel Angel Prado, but they have not publicly identified the woman who was injured.
Police said Monday they believed there was no ongoing threat, but wanted to speak with two persons of interest: 22-year-old Lennyn Barrios-Peralta and 19-year-old Andres Martina Velez. On Wednesday, Barrios-Peralta was charged with first-degree murder and felony discharge of a firearm with serious bodily injury. Velez was charged with obstructing justice. Warrants have been issued for their arrests.
Barrios-Peralta was seen on surveillance footage racking a gun before entering an elevator in the apartment building with Velez, according to the charging documents. Prado and the injured woman went into the elevator after them. The video shows a bullet hitting the frame of the elevator as the doors close. The door then reopened and Barrios-Peralta and Velez left the elevator and took the stairs to the lobby.
The woman who survived the shooting told police she didn’t really know Barrios-Peralta or Velez and wasn’t sure why there was a fight, according to the charging documents. She said Barrios-Peralta shot her first and then Prado. She said she pleaded with Barrios-Peralta to stop but instead he shot her and Prado again while they were on the ground.
Police were able to reach Velez over the phone, according to the charging documents. She told them she went with Barrios-Peralta to dispose of the gun. She said he left her on Tuesday and she doesn’t know where he is.
