Winter Market season kicks off at The Gateway

Salt Lake City’s Winter Market opened Saturday for the 2020-21 season in a new location at The Gateway and under a statewide mask mandate.

Recognized as an essential grocery service for the Intermountain region — and an economic lifeline for area farmers and producers — the market will continue Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through April 17.

It will take place inside former Z Gallerie spot at 12 S. Rio Grande but, when weather permits, some vendors might be outside.

Traditionally, the Winter Market has been held at the historic Rio Grande Depot, but the March earthquake caused structural damage to the building. While it is under repair, market organizers had to find a temporary home for the event.

The market is limited to basic grocery items — meats, fruits, vegetables, other agricultural products and some packaged goods.

Booths are situated 8 feet apart and anyone who attends — including vendors, staff and patrons — must wear a mask. There is no food sampling or dining areas.

Hand-sanitizer stations are positioned throughout the venue. Pets are not allowed.
