Man dies in fall at Glen Canyon Dam Overlook, and recovery crews find remains of another body

A man has died in a fall at the Glen Canyon Dam Overlook — and while crews were retrieving his body, they found the remains of another body.

The fall happened Sunday morning at the overlook, near Page, Ariz., just over the Utah state line in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, according to a release from the recreation area and the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses reported the man — identified as Orlando Serrano-Arzola, 25, of Phoenix — was on top of the rim, overlooking the Colorado River, taking pictures when he fell about 100 feet, then slid another 150 feet. Serrano-Arzola suffered extreme trauma, and showed no signs of life after the fall, the release said.

National Park Service dispatchers received an emergency call at 9:04 a.m. At 9:27 a.m., a Coconino County Sheriff’s deputy rappelled to Serrano-Arzola and confirmed he had died.

A crew — made up of people from the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, the National Park Service, the Page Police Department and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation — worked to recover Serrano-Arzola’s body.

While the crew was recovering the body, officers from the sheriff’s office and the recreation area discovered bones at the base of the outlook, which were determined to be human remains. The sheriff’s office and National Park Service are investigating, and no other information has been released.
