One man dead and three officers injured in a traffic stop that turned into a police chase

A man is dead and three Ogden police officers were injured after the man tried to flee during a traffic stop.

Ogden police officials said Tuesday that officers encountered the man "due to a traffic violation" near 26th Street and Monroe Boulevard.

"When officers asked the male to step out of the vehicle, he refused," Lt. Will Farr wrote in a news release, "and sped away from the scene, dragging one officer from the area in the process."

Police gave chase, and the man "began to drive erratically," Farr wrote, eventually ejecting the officer from the car after about two blocks.

He continued to drive on Sullivan Road, where he lost control of his vehicle and struck an Ogden police car ahead of him.

Police say after he struck the officer's car, he hit a 59-year-old man's car, which had been pulled over to the other side of the road.

"During the accident, the male subject fleeing from officers sustained critical injuries," Farr wrote. "Medical responded to the scene and began live-saving measures, however, the driver succumbed to his injuries."

Three officers sustained “non-life-threatening” injuries, and were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The 59-year-old driver was also injured and was treated at the scene of the crash.

Police did not immediately release the deceased man's name Tuesday evening.

The Utah Highway Patrol will now investigate, according to Ogden police.
