Fire burns Big O Tires on South Temple and adjacent mansion; no injuries reported

A fire started at the Big O Tires at 178 East South Temple on Friday night and spread to the vacant apartment building to the West.

A firefighter suffered heat exhaustion after responding to the fire. He was treated at the scene, according to Captain Anthony Burton. There were no other injuries. Burton said the fire was considered under control by 10:45 p.m.

The Salt Lake City fire department issued a two-alarm commercial fire call shortly before 10 p.m., Burton said. Eight fire trucks and two ladder trucks were called to the scene.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Salt Lake City Fire crews work on a fire on South Temple between State Street ad 200 East, on Friday, July 3, 2020.

Large plumes of thick, dark smoke rose up above the structures. Burton said they were likely caused by the burning of tires inside Big O. The store was closed at the time and was scheduled to be closed through the holiday weekend.

The site has been home to a tire store since the ZCMI Tire Center moved there in 1971.

The apartment building to the west of the tire center was built in 1903. It is one of the last of the original mansions on South Temple and bears a state historical site plaque. The 3,681 square-foot building was listed for sale for $700,000 and also listed for lease.
