The National Weather Service has issued a fire weather watch starting Sunday going into the following week.
The hazardous weather outlook for the western two thirds of Utah and southwest Wyoming stems from a deep trough — an elongated region of relatively low atmospheric pressure, often associated with fronts — that is expected to move to the West Coast this weekend, resulting in strong southwest winds and low humidity across much of the region Sunday into Tuesday.
The National Weather Service is expecting 20-25 mph winds, with gusts up to 40 mph. The combination of drier conditions and high winds could produce prime weather for fires to spread quickly.
The National Weather Service is encouraging people to follow these safety precautions to reduce the chances of fire ignitions: Keep vehicles off dry grass or brush; be careful with lawnmowers and power equipment as sparks could start wildfires; make sure campfires are completely out; properly dispose of cigarettes; check and obey all fire restrictions; and beware of target shooting as that may also result in sparks.
