Magna’s water is safe to drink again. The raccoon-related boil order has been lifted.

People in Magna can stop boiling their water.

The Magna Water District on Friday lifted a boil order imposed the day before, after inspectors found a dead raccoon in a municipal water tank Wednesday.

Samples of drinking water have been tested by a state-approved lab, and the district reports no harmful bacterial contamination in the tank — one of eight that serve Magna — or the city’s water distribution system.

On Thursday, the water district told Magna residents not to drink from the tap, and to boil tap water before drinking it. The district handed out bottled water to those who requested it, and will continue to do so until 4 p.m. Friday — or until supplies run out, which may happen sooner.

The raccoon was found Wednesday in a 500,000-gallon tank that holds water for Magna’s northwest corner. The tank was taken offline, drained, cleaned and disinfected, according to Terry Pollock, the water district’s general manager.

Pollock said Thursday the district believes a contractor working on the tank in the last week or two may have left a portal open, which allowed the raccoon to get inside.
