Utah man shot by police after he fired his gun at an officer. The suspect is expected to recover.

A Utah man who fired a gun at police was wounded when officers returned fire early Friday morning. The man’s wounds are not life-threatening, according to the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, deputies responded to a report of a domestic dispute between a man and his mother near 500 W. 5000 South in Washington Terrace. By the time officers arrived, the man had driven away.

About midnight, Riverdale Police received reports of an erratic driver who had struck several vehicles and driven off. They found the vehicle but not the driver at 377 W. 4800 South. Shortly thereafter, the learned the driver — believed to be the man involved in the earlier domestic dispute — was in a nearby house.

When officers tried to contact the man, there was “a brief confrontation and shots were fired,” according to a news release from the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.

According to police, the suspect fired a handgun at the deputy; he missed. The deputy returned fire and the suspect was wounded. The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police have not released any information about how many shots were fired or how many bullets struck the suspect.

The deputy who fired the shots has been placed on paid administrative leave. The shooting is under investigation by the Weber County Attorney’s Office Critical Incident Team, and an internal review will be conducted by the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.
