Officer shoots woman at Murray apartment complex

A police officer shot and injured a woman Thursday afternoon at an apartment complex in Murray.

The shooting happened at the Stillwater Apartments, at 5560 Vine St. The woman was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police spokesman Kenny Bass said.

A person called police around 1 p.m. to ask them to check on a woman who lives at the complex. When police arrived, an officer and the caller walked to the woman’s apartment and heard a gunshot inside, Bass said.

That officer asked the caller to leave and called for assistance.

Police entered the apartment after backup arrived. Inside, an officer fired once at the woman, hitting her.

Bass said he didn’t know if the woman was holding a gun when she was shot or what else may have prompted the officer to shoot.

That officer has been placed on paid administrative leave as West Valley City investigates the shooting.

Someone had called 911 about a week ago to report the woman was walking around the apartment complex with a gun, Bass said.
