A Utah man has been charged with stabbing his former best friend to death after accusing the friend of having an affair with his girlfriend.
Spencer Greenway, 27, of West Jordan, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with murder, a first-degree felony, in the death of Adam Cross, 27.
According to a charging document, Cross’ girlfriend told police that on the night of Sept. 21, he began “arguing with someone on the phone while driving back to his house.” Later that night, Greenway “showed up” at Cross’ home at 9277 S. 2825 West, and the two began “fighting outside in the street.”
Greenway’s girlfriend later told police that Greenway “suspected [she] was cheating on him with Adam,” and told her he was going to “Adam’s house and I’m gonna beat his ass.”
According to a probable cause statement, Cross’ twin brother told police that Greenway “was one of [Adam] Cross’ best friends when they were growing up.”
Cross’ girlfriend told police Greenway “was swinging a bat” and hit Cross “in the face.” Cross “broke away” and “began walking back to the house” as the suspect began shouting at him and “waving a knife.” The suspect got in his car and drove away; Cross’ girlfriend drove him to Jordan Valley Hospital, where he later died.
Cross’ girlfriend later picked Greenway out of a photo lineup, according to police. When he returned home, Greenway said, “I stabbed Adam,” according to his girlfriend, and showed her a knife with blood on it.
According to police, Greenway told them he had “unsheathed a knife and poked Adam with it.” He also said he “hit Adam in the face” with a “piece of wood … about the size of his forearm,” and that “when he pulled out his knife he lunged forward and got Adam near the armpit.”
The medical examiner ruled that Cross died from a “stab wound to the chest.” Police took a “large knife in its sheath” from Greenway; the knife “appeared to have blood on it.”
Greenway is being held in the Salt Lake County jail. His bail was set at $1 million.
