Utah man dies after he’s shot by South Ogden police

A Utah man who was shot by police during a confrontation in South Ogden is dead.

Frederick Jeremy Atkin, 42, of Ogden, was transported to a hospital after the shooting early Friday morning; he later died, according to the Weber County Attorney’s Office.

According to police, Atkin was driving a red Mustang when — suspecting that he was driving under the influence — officers tried to pull him over about 1 a.m. Atkin reportedly sped away, with police in pursuit. Police spiked the tires of Atkin’s car, which came to a stop at the intersection of Riverdale Road and Wall Avenue in South Ogden.

When police approached the car, there was “critical incident” and "a single South Ogden police officer discharged a firearm,” according to a statement from the Weber County Attorney’s Office. The officer fired at Atkin, killing him. No information was released about how many shots were fired, whether Atkin was armed or whether he fired at police.

The officer, who has not been identified, was placed on paid leave while the shooting is investigated by the Weber County Critical Incident Task Force.
