Man killed by Cedar City police in apparent domestic dispute is identified

Law enforcement officials in Iron County have identified the man a Cedar City police officer shot and killed Monday, in what police say was a domestic dispute.

James Aubrey Sr., 56, was shot by a Cedar City police officer around 1 p.m. Monday, outside a residence on Sunset Drive.

Police responded to a 911 call from a woman who said her husband, Aubrey, was threatening her and her adult son, according to a statement from the Iron County Sheriff’s Office. Four Cedar City police officers arrived at the scene and talked to the family outside. They then went up to the house, identified themselves, and asked Aubrey to come out with his hands up.

Instead, the sheriff’s office reported, Aubrey pointed a handgun toward the officers. One officer fired three rounds and hit Aubrey. Officers began lifesaving efforts, but medical personnel who responded to the scene pronounced Aubrey dead.

The officer, who has been on the force for eight years, has been placed on paid administrative leave, as dictated by department policy. The Iron/Garfield/Beaver Critical Incident Task Force is investigating the shooting.
