Utah jail contractor arrested for alleged sexual activity with inmate

A 54-year-old woman working in food service at the Cache County jail has been arrested for allegedly having sex with an inmate.

The woman, who has been fired, was booked into the Cache County jail Friday morning on suspicion of custodial sexual relations, a third-degree felony. She had been working for the food service contractor for approximately 3 to 4 months, according to a news release from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies began to suspect the woman had a relationship with an inmate when they overheard conversations between them during routine monitoring of jail phone calls, the release states.

Investigators found evidence of one instance of sexual activity between the two. They also allege she brought contraband into the jail.

The inmate — a state prisoner housed at the county jail — was transferred back to prison.

Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said in the news release that the sheriff’s department wasn’t releasing any more information.

The county attorney will now determine whether or not to file charges. The Salt Lake Tribune generally does not identify individuals accused of crimes who haven’t been charged.

Jail records show the woman’s bond is set at $5,000.
