Woman dead, teen injured after shooting in West Valley City

A woman died and a teen was injured in an overnight shooting in West Valley City, according to police. A suspect is in custody.

Just before midnight Saturday, officers responded to a call from a clerk at the Holiday Oil, 3086 S. 2700 West, who reported that a 15-year-old boy entered the gas station with a gunshot wound to his shoulder, according to Roxeanne Vainuku, public information officer for West Valley police. While interviewing the teen, a vehicle stopped at the light at 2700 W. 3100 South. When additional incoming officers approached the car, they discovered 34-year-old Angela Montoya in the back seat with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. She died on the scene.

About the same time, dispatch received a call from someone who said they were being chased near Valley Fair Mall by someone with a gun. Responding officers found Jayson Chase, who provided information that tied him to the shooting.

Vainuku said initial reports indicate that five people, including Chase, were traveling inside the vehicle heading northbound on 2700 West. Passengers reported hearing popping sounds from the back seat, where Chase sat with two other passengers. They were shot, as was the driver, who drove to another location and left the vehicle behind.

At that time, a different person, who knew the passengers, got into the car and started to drive to the hospital to get help for the woman in the back seat, Vainuku said. That driver stopped at 2700 West and 3100 South after seeing emergency vehicles and sought help there.

Police have not located the first driver, nor the front seat passenger. So far, police have not found information that indicates the first driver has sought medical treatment.

It’s unclear what led to the shooting, Vainuku said.

Chase is being held on several charges related to the shooting, including aggravated murder.
