Authorities are investigating whether someone started a fire burning east of Springville that came within half a mile of several homes.
The Round Peak fire, which sparked Monday evening, is estimated to have burned 267 acres as of Tuesday night. Three engines, 60 firefighters, one helicopter and two single engine aircraft were battling the blaze and had reached 5% containment.
No homes or other structures were immediately threatened; the fire is burning mostly brush and grass, according to authorities. There are no reports of injuries.
Another fire is burning in Box Elder County, where planes and helicopters dropping water and flame retardant on the Radio Hill fire were called off temporarily on Monday afternoon when a drone was sighted in the area.
“As long as drones stay away from the area, air operations will continue throughout the day” on Tuesday, according Mitch Zundel, a spokesman for Box Elder County.
Lightning is believed to have sparked the blaze that’s burning north of Interstate 84 and west of Interstate 15 near the Utah-Idaho border.
That fire has grown to more than 2,300 acres and is 30% contained, according to fire authorities. It is not threatening any structures.
Officials warned Tuesday morning that the day’s hot, dry and windy weather could lead to high fire danger in the western half of the state.
