Man accused of using piece of wood to attack police officer at Riverton school

A 21-year-old man is suspected of attacking and injuring a Unified Police Department officer Monday at a middle school in Riverton.

“He took a couple hits to the head with a piece of wood," UPD Sgt. Melody Gray said of the officer, whose name is not being released. "He’s going to be fine.”

Gray said police arrested Kalen Cook, 21, of Bluffdale. Cook faces two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, trespassing and possession of a controlled substance, police said.

Gray said that wood was some kind of branch or lumber, about 2 inches wide by 2 inches thick. The man was carrying it at South Hills Middle School, 13508 S. 4000 West in Riverton.

At about 1:50 p.m., a school resource officer saw the man walking around the school. Gray said the officer confronted the man, who then began hitting the officer with the wood. Other officers arrived. A Taser was used to subdue the suspect and arrest him, Gray said. No students were involved in the altercation.
