A Salt Lake City homeowner is dead and a man who was renting a room from him has been arrested after a fight at the residence early Thursday.
According to a probable cause statement, Jesse Bruce, 40, called 911 at about 1 a.m. Thursday and said “he had stabbed his landlord.” Officers arrived at a home near 800 East Northcliffe Drive and found the body of Corey Haney, 40, who owned the home. He had been stabbed “multiple times,” according to a police spokesman.
Bruce was transported to a hospital, where he was treated for injuries he suffered in the fight and later released.
According to police detectives, Bruce “invoked his rights and asked for an attorney” but then “spontaneously stated that it was self defense.” However, according to the probable cause statement, “evidence collected from the crime scene” gave detectives “reason to believe” Bruce “was the aggressor in this deadly confrontation.”
Bruce was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder, according to police.
