Millcreek man arrested in homicide investigation, found screaming with blood on his hands

One man is dead and another man is under arrest after he ran screaming from his Millcreek home with blood on his hands on Monday afternoon.

Tyler James Vernon, 37, was booked into jail for investigation of aggravated murder, Unified police said. He was arrested outside a home on the 1200 East block of 3770 South about 2:30 p.m. after he called police saying he had killed someone, according to a probable cause statement.

UPD spokeswoman Melody Gray said the victim — 61-year-old Steven Richard Nyce — suffered severe head trauma. The exact cause of death is under investigation, though police believe Vernon may have beat Nyce with a metal object during a fight because they found him outside of the home bloody and holding a metal object, the probable cause statement said.

The relationship between the two men, who apparently lived together, is unclear.

As police attempted to interview Vernon, he called officers “demons” and “commanded them to release him in the name of his God,” according to the probable cause statement.
