Thousands of Utahns were all shook up early Friday morning as a pair of earthquakes struck just south of Herriman.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the first, which struck at 5:02 a.m., registered a 3.2 on the Richter scale. The second quake, which struck at 5:09 a.m., was stronger, registering a 3.7. The USGS put the epicenters 2 kilometers south of Bluffdale, 8.8 kilometers deep.
The quakes were felt across southern Salt Lake and northern Utah Counties, but initial reports of damage were minor — items knocked off shelves and minor cracks in walls and floors. But that didn’t stop locals from taking to social media:
Jeff McGrath wrote an earthquake based Valentine that read “Nothing can shake our love.”
Comedian Jay Whittaker said “Utah just got ‘rocked’ by the Diet Coke of earthquakes.”
Most, however, expressed surprise at the rare quakes.
