Boy fatally injured when airbags deployed during a three-car crash

A 4-year-old boy was killed Wednesday afternoon in a three-car crash in South Jordan that also left several others injured. As a result of the crash, South Jordan Parkway was closed between 4000 West and Bangerter Highway.

Lt. Matt Pennington with South Jordan Police says the car carrying the boy was traveling eastbound when it struck a car that had stopped because of backed-up traffic. That car then struck another vehicle in front of it.

According to police, the boy who was killed was sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle without a booster seat or child restraint, although he was wearing a seat belt.

Pennington says the boy was critically injured when the airbags in the car deployed. The boy died after being taken to a hospital. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Police would like to remind drivers that according to Utah law, children up to age 8 must be properly restrained in a booster seat or carseat, and all children under 13 should sit in the back seat.
