Hundreds of abortion protesters marched Saturday at Utah’s Capitol.
Organizers of the March for Life event wanted to draw attention to the 3,000 abortions performed each year in Utah, as well as two anti-abortion bills that will be considered during the 2019 legislative session, according to the March for Life website.
Rep. Cheryl Acton, R-West Jordan, has proposed a bill that would ban most abortions after 15 weeks. If approved, the bill would be among the most restrictive in the nation.
Legislators will also debate a bill that would criminalize doctors who abort a fetus solely for a Down syndrome diagnosis, sponsored for the second year by Rep. Karianne Lisonbee, R-Clearfield.
Legal experts say both bills would likely be deemed unconstitutional.
