Nearly 1 in 4 Americans now earns money from a side hustle — like driving for Lyft, offering their home on AirB&B or delivering for UberEats — according to a 2016 survey by the Pew Research Center.

The so-called “gig economy,” in which workers often take on multiple jobs from different companies rather than working full-time for a traditional employer, has been promoted to younger people as a way to build a career on their own terms.
