A man who reportedly attacked a clerk at a Millcreek Starbucks was shot and wounded by a customer at the coffee shop, according to police.
At 6:10 a.m., police received a panic alarm from the 7-Eleven at 904 E. 3900 South, said Unified Police Detective Ken Hansen. They arrived to find a man — later identified as 37-year-old Benjamin S. Overall — acting aggressively toward customers and employees.
“They confronted him, and he ran across the street to the Starbucks” at 3898 S. 900 East, Hansen said. “He went behind the counter and started assaulting one of the clerks, hitting her in the head with a metal object.”
A customer in the store got Overall’s attention, “and the suspect then came after him,” Hansen said. The customer “fired one round, hitting the suspect in the chest as he approached him.”
Overall left the Starbucks, and police used a stun gun to subdue him. They then discovered he’d been shot. The suspect was transported to a hospital in critical condition, Hansen said. As of Thursday evening, he was considered in serious but stable condition.
The customer who shot Overall has a permit to carry the gun and is cooperating with the investigation. His name hasn’t been released. The Starbucks employee also was transported to a hospital but was not believed to be seriously injured.
