2 arrested after man is shot in Layton, dies in Idaho

Layton police made two arrests Friday in the bizarre case of a man who was shot in Layton and died at a hospital in Idaho.

On Thursday morning, the Layton Police Department was notified that Anthony Child, 26 — who had been brought to a hospital in Preston, Idaho, after he was shot in Layton — had died. According to police, Child had asked his companions to drive him to Preston in an apparent attempt to hide a drug operation inside the mobile home where he was shot.

Police said two armed men wearing masks had broken into the mobile home, at 2500 N. Fort Lane, about 5 a.m. Thursday and that “during the course of the robbery, numerous rounds were fired and the victim was hit several times.”

Layton police arrested Angel Christopher Abreu, 22, on Friday night in Ogden, recovering two guns. And a 16-year-old male — not identified because of his age — was arrested early Saturday morning. They were booked into jail for investigation of aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated burglary.

On Friday, Layton police said that when they searched the mobile home where Child was shot, they found “an active mushroom grow operation, laboratory equipment used in the extraction of THC from marijuana, and distribution amounts of marijuana — en excess of 50 gallons stored in 5-gallon buckets.

During the investigation, three men at the mobile home in Layton were taken into custody and booked into the Davis County Jail on a variety of charges — including obstruction of justice, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and child endangerment.
