A Unified police officer shot a man acting “erratically” in the parking lot of a Midvale McDonald’s early Wednesday morning.
Steve Michael Darrel Hawkins, 26, of Salt Lake City was transported to a local hospital and was released later. He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail for investigation of public intoxication, interfering with a police officer, resisting arrest and aggravated assault on a police officer.
According to Sgt. Melody Gray of Unified police, at about 1:30 a.m., the officer approached Hawkins outside the closed restaurant at 425 W. 7200 South. An altercation ensued and, according to police, the man brandished a screwdriver and the officer shot him. The officer was not injured.
The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating; state policy stipulates that an uninvolved agency handle a police shooting.
