Just before a deadly crash Monday night, a caller reported a truck driving recklessly and speeding on Mountain View Corridor near Herriman, police say.
Two minutes later, at 7:18 p.m., a truck crashed into another truck and a minivan at the highway’s northbound intersection with Rosecrest Road (about 14500 South) in Herriman, killing an infant girl and sending six others to the hospital.
As of Tuesday morning, two of the victims remained in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, including a 24-year-old woman who was a passenger in the northbound truck and a 34-year-old man who was the driver of the truck that was hit, according to Unified police.
The minivan contained the baby girl who died and three others who were in serious condition with injuries that were not life-threatening: a 26-year-old man who was driving, a 24-year-old woman and a 3-year-old girl.
Additionally, police said, the 26-year-old man driving the northbound truck was in serious condition.
The man was in Adult Probation & Parole custody Tuesday, police said, because he had been on probation at the time of Monday’s crash.
The driver’s criminal history includes a 2012 conviction of second-degree felony theft by receiving stolen property and third-degree felony attempted theft by receiving stolen property.
In 2016, he was also convicted of class B misdemeanor possession or use of a controlled substance and class C misdemeanor giving false personal identity to a peace officer. In that case, a $2,500 warrant was issued for him in February after he failed to appear in court.
Monday’s crash closed northbound lanes of the highway for several hours, and the crash investigation is ongoing.
Police were still working to notify the victims’ family members Tuesday. Officers were also working to determine the exact age of the baby who died. Originally, police believed the baby to be about 9 months old but later said she may be 5 months old.
According to the Utah Department of Transportation website, the speed limit in the area where the crash occurred is 55 mph.
