Salt Lake City International Airport has nation’s lowest flight cancellation rate

Among the nation’s 25 busiest airports, Salt Lake City International had the lowest rate of canceled flights during 2017.

That’s according to a study released Tuesday by InsureMyTrip, a travel insurance company, based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

It said only 0.4 percent of flights at Salt Lake City International — 448 out of 111,912 flights — were canceled that year.

The next lowest rates at the nation’s 25 busiest airports were at Phoenix Sky Harbor International, 0.56 percent; Minneapolis-St. Paul International, 0.57 percent; and Seattle-Tacoma International, 0.61 percent.

New York City’s LaGuardia airport had the worst rate, 3.23 percent. Behind it were Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental, 2.73 percent; Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, 2.7 percent; and Newark Liberty International, 2.57 percent.

The report said bad weather is the top reason for cancellation — and LaGuardia’s rate, for example, suffered because of cancellations from Winter Storm Stella last year.

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport had the most overall cancellations, 364,655. For the first time in five years, that was higher than the total at Chicago’s O’Hare International, which had 266,460. A December power outage in Atlanta contributed to the spike there.
