Body of missing autistic man found in hills above Herriman

(Photo courtesy of the Unified Police Department) Police are searching for 20-year-old Tanner Oblad, who left his Herriman home Wednesday morning to go to school.

The body of a man missing since Feb. 21 was recovered by police Tuesday afternoon in the foothills south of Herriman.

Tanner Oblad, 20, left his house in Herriman on Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. to go to school at Salt Lake Community College’s Taylorsville campus, according to the Unified Police Department. He did not bring his phone or wallet.

While an official cause of death hasn’t been released, foul play is not suspected and it appears Oblad died by accident, Det. Ken Hansen of the Unified Police Department said.

Police have described Oblad as a high-functioning autistic person.

His body was found along the Friendship Trail, which starts on the south side of town. Hansen said it would take about an hour or two to walk to the location of the body, which was close to the trail.

Oblad was last seen while leaving his home near 6000 W. Intrigue Drive (about 13600 South), according to the Department of Public Safety.

Hansen said police used surveillance video from homes around Oblad’s neighborhood to determine Oblad’s path. Video shows Oblad hiked up to the trail on the day he went missing.

“The community was really cooperative,” Hansen said.

The body was discovered by a police helicopter. Hansen said there were no obvious signs of severe trauma, but a medical examiner will have to determine a cause of death.
