Ogden police arrest scythe-wielding man after store threats, brief SWAT standoff

Police say a crazed, scythe-wielding man was behind bars Thursday after having sent an Ogden convenience store clerk scurrying for cover after threatening to kill her.

Ogden police Lt. Tim Scott said the 39-year-old, scraggily-haired and bearded suspect entered the Maverik store, 689 Washington Boulevard, at 5:43 a.m. Tuesday, angrily shouting at the woman before exiting. As he walked from the area, he damaged a parked car outside with the 5-foot scythe.

The man was familiar to police, having had a history of trespassing at the business and exhibiting “erratic behavior and [making] threats . . . to employees,” Scott said.

Officers shortly located the suspect at his residence in the 200 East block of 7th Street, but he initially refused to surrender.

Ogden Metro SWAT officers were called to the scene and the suspect gave up soon thereafter.

The scythe was recovered from inside the residence after a search warrant was obtained.

Michael Just was booked into the Weber County jail on suspicion of aggravated assault, making threats, criminal trespassing and damaging property.
