Look Ahead: Local events and things to do this week, Feb. 2-8

‘Groundhog Day’ twice; ‘Breakfast Club’ with more songs; ‘Cinderella’ at Ballet West

Feb. 2

A familiar story, told twice

Sunday is Groundhog Day, which used to be known as a day to look forward to spring six weeks away — but, thanks to Harold Ramis’ 1993 movie classic “Groundhog Day,” it’s become a metaphor for repeating the same thing over and over until you get it right. The Broadway Centre Cinemas will screen a double feature Sunday, showing “Groundhog Day” at 4:30 p.m., followed by a screening of “Groundhog Day” at 7 p.m. For tickets, go to slfs.org.

Feb. 7

Don’t you forget about me

The State Room, usually purely a music venue, will be showing a movie Friday night: A 40th anniversary screening of John Hughes’ angsty high school classic “The Breakfast Club” — with live soundtrack accompaniment by the Salt Lake City classic rock band The Discographers, which will perform songs from classic ‘80s teen-movie soundtracks in sync with the movie. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30, available at TheStateRoomPresents.com.

Feb. 7-16

Glass slipper meets ballet slippers

Ballet West opens its new production of “Cinderella” on Friday, at the Capitol Theatre, 50 W. 200 South, Salt Lake City. This version is based on Sir Frederick Ashton’s production of the classic fairy tale, with new sets and costumes from London’s Royal Ballet, which have never been seen in Utah. Performances are Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m., then more performances Feb. 12-16 for the Valentine’s weekend crowd. For tickets, go to balletwest.org.
